Hatch Hacks – Essential Oils

Essential oils are often used as a method to perform aromatherapy, a form of alternative medicine that employs plant extracts to support health and well-being. Essential oils are compounds extracted from plants. These oils are all-natural and come right from the plant. What happens is that the oils capture the plant’s scent and flavor, or what we call “essence”. Specific aromatic compounds provide different benefits that support the human body’s well-being/health.

For instance, peppermint is one of the more frequently used oils in households around the nation. Peppermint is known for boosting energy and aid digestion. It is a hybrid mint that is a cross between spearmint and watermint and is only found naturally in the areas of North America and Europe. The primary components of peppermint oil are menthol and menthone which provide that cool, fresh feeling.

The lavender oil is a common practice to relieve stress. Similar to most oils, lavender oil can be taken orally, applied to the skin, and/or breathed in through aromatherapy. The wonderful effects of lavender can lighten the skin, reduce wrinkles, and lessen acne. One of my personal favorite uses of lavender oil is to pour it on the rocks when in the sauna. It is a great way of infusing full effects on your body.

Along with the other stunning oils in the market, sandalwood is not to be overlooked. Sandalwood is commonly found in many perfumes and air fresheners. It comes from the roots of one of the most valuable trees in the world, Santalum album, or also known as the East Indian sandalwood tree. Although it’s known for its smell, it goes beyond that and provides health benefits as well. Sandalwood has been a popular ingredient in traditional medical practices to treat common illnesses such as the common cold, muscle problems, digestive problems, etc.
